Search Is Changing - Are You Ready?

Remember when ranking on Google was enough? Those days are ending.

In 2026, a growing percentage of searches never reach a traditional website. Instead, AI systems like Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Bing Copilot generate answers directly. If your business isn't part of those answers, you're missing a rapidly growing channel.

This is where GEO comes in.

    What Is GEO?

GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) is the practice of making your website and content easy for AI systems to understand, reference, and recommend.

Traditional SEO = ranking on Google search results pages. GEO = being referenced in AI-generated answers.

They're related but different. You need both.

    How AI Search Actually Works

When someone asks ChatGPT "who's a good web developer in Canberra?" or uses Google's AI Overview to find "affordable website design ACT", the AI:

    1. Crawls indexed web content
    2. Evaluates authority, relevance, and freshness
    3. Synthesises an answer from multiple sources
    4. Sometimes cites specific websites

The key difference from traditional search: the AI decides what to include in its answer. You can't bid on a position or rely purely on keywords. You need to be the authoritative, clear, well-structured source that the AI wants to reference.

5 GEO Strategies for Your Business

    1. Write Definitive, Clear Statements

AI systems love content that makes clear, attributable claims.

Bad for GEO: "We offer various web design services at competitive prices."

Good for GEO: "RadXP builds professional websites for Canberra businesses starting from $2,500, including mobile optimisation, SEO setup, and a content management system."

The specific version is more likely to be quoted by an AI because it contains a definitive, factual answer to a question someone might ask.

    2. Structure Content as Q&A

AI systems are trained on question-answer patterns. If your content directly answers common questions, it's more likely to be referenced.

    • Use FAQ sections with clear, complete answers
    • Write blog posts that answer specific questions in the title
    • Use heading tags (H2, H3) that mirror natural questions

Example: Instead of a heading like "Our Web Design Process", use "How does the web design process work?"

    3. Include Structured Data (Schema)

Schema markup is machine-readable metadata that tells AI and search engines exactly what your content means.

    • FAQPage - marks up your FAQs so AI can extract them
    • LocalBusiness - tells AI about your location, services, and contact info
    • HowTo - marks up process or instruction content
    • Article - with speakable properties for voice and AI assistant answers

If this sounds technical, it is. But the impact is significant.

    4. Create llms.txt Files

This is brand new and most businesses haven't heard of it yet. An llms.txt file (similar to robots.txt) provides AI systems with a structured summary of your website.

    • What your business does
    • What services you offer
    • How to contact you
    • What content is most important

Early adopters of llms.txt are seeing better representation in AI-generated answers.

    5. Build Authority Through Consistency

AI systems evaluate trustworthiness across the web. This means:

    • Consistent NAP (name, address, phone) across all directories
    • Reviews and testimonials on multiple platforms
    • Backlinks from reputable local sources
    • Regular, high-quality content publication
    • Active social media presence that matches your website claims

The more consistently your business information appears across the web, the more confidently AI will reference you.

    GEO vs SEO: What's Different?

    What You Should Do Today

    1. Add FAQ schema to your website's service and location pages
    2. Write clear, quotable descriptions of what you do, where you are, and what you charge
    3. Ensure NAP consistency across all your online listings
    4. Create or update your llms.txt file
    5. Allow AI crawlers in your robots.txt (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot)

This isn't about replacing SEO. It's about adding another layer. Businesses that start now will have a significant advantage as AI search grows.
